And William Blake

I was reminded by my cousin Frances that I’d failed to include an important subversive in my piece about the mainstream acceptance of rebel music (thank you Jacqueline Springer for that observation, too).

She’s right.

“Don’t omit from your list of subversives William Blake, writer of Jerusalem which so movingly opened the ceremony: great apocalyptic visionary and thorn in the establishment’s side. For me this expressed an anchoring spiritual integrity out of which the subsequent explosion of joy all cascaded, Frankie, F Buttons et al! True artistic vision always comes from the margins: when it finds as big a stage as the Olympic Opening Ceremony, it’s pretty wonderful.”
